  Week 01

 (First class of the semester)
(Drafting basic skirt pattern for the first time)

During the first week of the semester, Ms. Melina provided us with a comprehensive introduction to the module and assignment brief. Following the briefing and ice-breaking session, we immediately began working on Assignment 01. Ms. Melina guided us through the process of drawing a skirt pattern on mahjong paper. This was my first experience with pattern and garment making, so it took me some time to understand and complete the drawing. Despite the initial difficulty, I found the process intriguing and began to appreciate the complexity and creativity involved in pattern making.

As we progressed, Ms. Melina's patience and expertise were invaluable. She demonstrated each step in detail, ensuring we grasped the fundamental concepts. Her hands-on approach and willingness to answer questions helped me gradually build confidence in my skills. The initial challenges I faced in understanding the patterns became learning opportunities, and I started to see improvement in my work. This experience not only enhanced my technical abilities but also ignited a passion for garment construction and design, motivating me to tackle future projects with greater enthusiasm and dedication.

Week 02

(progressing on bodice pattern and learning basic sewing techniques with Ms. Melina)

This week, we drew the basic women's bodice pattern on mahjong paper. Compared to last week, I completed the task more efficiently and felt myself gradually getting the hang of it. The process felt more familiar, and I was able to apply what I had previously learned with greater confidence and precision.

After completing the basic women's bodice drawing, Ms. Melina taught us the basics of using the sewing machine. Her step-by-step instructions and demonstrations helped us understand the mechanics and functions of the machine. This hands-on experience was invaluable, as it provided a practical understanding of how patterns translate into actual garments.

Creating the basic pattern is a crucial part of Assignment 01, so I approached it with patience and dedication. I took my time to ensure accuracy and neatness, knowing that a strong foundation in these basic skills would be essential for more complex projects in the future. This meticulous approach not only helped me improve my technical skills but also instilled a sense of pride and accomplishment in my work.

Week 03

(Ms.Melina showing the different calico fabric and sewing)

Continuing with Assignment 01, we began the third week of class by drawing the sleeves pattern on mahjong paper. This task was more complex, but by now, I was feeling more confident and efficient in my pattern-making skills.

After everyone completed their sleeve patterns, Ms. Melina showed us the differences between various types of calico fabric. She explained the unique qualities and applications of each type, which was enlightening and added depth to our understanding of fabric selection.

Next, we were instructed to cut out the calico fabric and start practicing the basic sewing techniques that Ms. Melina had demonstrated in the previous week. Although everything was new to me, I quickly got the hang of it and found that I understood the process well. Ms. Melina’s clear instructions and hands-on approach made it easier to grasp the concepts and apply them effectively.

This week’s activities not only reinforced my pattern-making skills but also gave me practical experience with sewing, further building my confidence and enthusiasm for the project.

Week 04

 (progressing the basic pattern)

(Drawing the basic pattern during class)

(tidy up the pattern block and editing slides)

As the due date for Assignment 01 approaches, Ms. Melina instructed us to trace all 13 pattern pieces onto our own cardboard or manila card by the end of today.

During this week's class, I was very focused and dedicated all my attention to drawing the pattern pieces. I knew the importance of precision and accuracy, so I took my time to ensure each piece was correctly traced.

Fortunately, I managed to finish tracing all the pieces and cutting them out by the end of the class. With this major task completed, my remaining work at home is to design the slides for submission. This involves organizing my work, adding annotations, and ensuring that the presentation clearly conveys my design process and final patterns.

Week 05 ( Wesak replacement on 17 May 2024 - field trip)

(Field trip memories with my classmates and Ms.Melina)

Since our Week 05 class coincided with the Wesak Day public holiday, Ms. Melina scheduled a replacement class for Friday of Week 04.

We went on a field trip to the KL area, meeting up at the Central Market at 10 a.m. After gathering, Ms. Melina took us to Chinatown for brunch. The weather in KL was extremely hot, making the walk quite challenging.

Following brunch, we visited the National Textile Museum, conveniently located near Central Market, at around 12 p.m. At the museum, I learned a lot about the history of fabric and Malaysian fashion. The exhibits provided valuable insights into traditional and modern textile practices.

After our museum visit, Ms. Melina guided us to a nearby fabric shop. There, we learned about different types of fabrics, their uses, and how to choose the right fabric for our projects. Ms. Melina's explanations were very clear and informative, making the experience meaningful and enriching. This field trip not only enhanced our understanding of fabrics but also deepened our appreciation for Malaysia's rich textile heritage.

Week 06

 (Ms.Melina briefing assignment in class)

Moving into Week 06, we started our next assignment for this module. Ms. Melina provided us with a detailed briefing about the assignment at the beginning of the class and demonstrated step-by-step how to sew a collared shirt using calico fabric.

First, we practiced doing a lock stitch and sewing a zipper onto the fabric. This exercise was crucial for building our foundational sewing skills. We then placed the completed exercises into our prepared files for future reference.

Next, I carefully followed Ms. Melina's step-by-step instructions on sewing a shirt. This process involved cutting the fabric accurately and sewing the pieces together methodically. Ms. Melina's guidance was invaluable, as she explained each step in detail, ensuring we understood the techniques involved. This hands-on experience was both challenging and rewarding, as it allowed us to apply our skills to a complete garment.

Week 07

After finishing the collared shirt, we started working on sewing a skirt this week. As usual, Ms. Melina demonstrated each step of the process, providing clear and detailed instructions.

Following her guidance, I proceeded to sew the skirt using calico fabric. I found this task enjoyable and, surprisingly, much easier than sewing the shirt. The simpler construction and fewer pieces made the process more straightforward. Completing the skirt successfully boosted my confidence and solidified my understanding of garment construction techniques.

Throughout the process, Ms. Melina's step-by-step demonstrations were incredibly helpful. She explained each technique thoroughly, from cutting the fabric to assembling the pieces and finishing the seams. This hands-on approach made the entire experience more engaging and less intimidating. By the end of the class, I had not only completed the skirt but also gained a deeper appreciation for the nuances of garment making. The satisfaction of seeing the finished piece reinforced my enthusiasm for this module and motivated me to continue honing my skills in fashion design and construction.

Week 08 (Independent Learning Week)

 (Details of shirt and skirt)

During the independent learning week in Week 8, I took the time to refine and detail the shirt and skirt I had completed in the previous two weeks. For the shirt, I sewed on the buttons and attached the collar, making sure everything was secure and neatly finished. I also corrected some mistakes I had made earlier, ensuring that the seams were straight and the construction was clean. Working on these details allowed me to improve the overall quality of the garments and gain a better understanding of the finer points of garment construction.

Week 09

 (Shirt on dummy)

 (Skirt on dummy)

 (Both on dummy)

In Week 09, we completed the preparations for our second assignment submission. We were instructed to dress the shirt and skirt we had made on a dress form (dummy) in Mayamode, ensuring that the garments were properly fitted and displayed.

Following this, we worked on creating additional patterns to include in our Task 2 slides. This involved generating detailed illustrations and annotations to showcase our design process and the variations we had explored. These patterns were crucial for presenting a comprehensive overview of our work and demonstrating the technical aspects of our designs.

In addition to preparing the garments and patterns, we spent time finalizing our slides for submission. This included organizing the content logically, adding descriptive text, and ensuring that all visual elements were clear and professional. We carefully reviewed our slides to make sure they effectively communicated our design concepts and technical skills. The attention to detail in both the physical garments and the presentation was essential for a successful submission, and it provided an opportunity to reflect on the progress we had made throughout the assignment.

Week 10

 (Purchasing Fabrics)

 (Working on pattern)

 (Tracing and cutting fabric)

By this week, we had begun drafting patterns for the final task. In Mr. Jr's class, we had already designed and selected the two looks that would be the focus of our final project.

I sought assistance from Ms. Melina during the pattern drafting process and also took the initiative to try drafting the patterns on my own. This task proved to be more challenging than the previous assignments, as it required not only understanding the basic garment construction but also incorporating complex design elements and details.

By the end of the week, I had completed drafting the patterns and started purchasing the fabrics needed for the assignment. This involved selecting materials that matched the design concepts and ensured the quality and functionality of the final garments.

Week 11

 (Sewing in progress)

This week, we were given the freedom to continue progressing with our work. I traced the patterns that I had drawn last week onto the fabric I had purchased. After cutting out all the pieces, I began sewing my first look.

My goal was to complete the first look by the end of the week. However, due to a lack of sleep and high levels of stress, my immune system weakened, and I caught the flu by the end of the week. As a result of being unwell, my progress on sewing the first look came to a halt. This setback has been frustrating, but I am focused on recovering quickly so that I can resume work and meet my project deadlines.

Despite this setback, I am determined to get back on track as soon as possible. I plan to prioritize my health and manage my time better to avoid further delays. Once I recover, I will re-assess my progress and adjust my schedule to ensure that I can complete both looks on time. This experience has highlighted the importance of balancing workload and self-care, and I am committed to applying these lessons to my remaining tasks.

Week 12

 (Sick and Move on 🏃🏻‍♀️‍➡️)

 (Continue on Sewing ......)

It’s disappointing that I couldn’t finish my first look on time this week, especially with only two weeks left before the submission deadline. However, I reminded myself that I am still capable of completing both garments by the due date. This small but positive mindset has motivated me to push forward and not give up.

The most challenging part of the first look was sewing the placket, which involved navigating two angled turns and ensuring it was straight. I experimented with several methods, but none were successful initially. I sought advice from Ms. Melina and conducted additional research online to find solutions. Although this section took considerable time and halted my progress, I eventually managed to complete it, despite it not being perfect. This experience has been a valuable learning opportunity and has strengthened my problem-solving skills.

Despite these challenges, I’ve learned a lot about perseverance and adaptability. The difficulties with the placket taught me the importance of seeking help and experimenting with different techniques. As I move forward, I’m focusing on improving my efficiency and applying the problem-solving skills I've developed. I am determined to use the remaining time wisely to ensure that both looks are completed to the best of my ability. This experience, though tough, has reinforced my commitment to my craft and my ability to overcome obstacles.

Week 13

 (2 Garment almost!!!!!!)

I finally completed my first look and began working on the second look. However, I encountered a setback when I ran out of fabric and needed to purchase more.

Starting this week, I have been staying at Mayamode every day until midnight with my friend and classmate Geraldine. Although the extended hours and intense focus on completing our garments were challenging, working together and supporting each other through this period strengthened our bond.

By the end of the week, I had finished my second garment. Unfortunately, I realized I hadn’t yet bought the buttons, and since it was a Sunday, many shops were closed. To ensure I could complete my garment on time, I had to go to Spotlight, which is quite expensive, and purchase the buttons at a high cost. Despite these hurdles, I managed to meet my deadline and complete the project.

Completing both garments under such tight deadlines and facing these obstacles was a significant achievement. Although the process was stressful and required sacrifices, it was also incredibly rewarding. The experience taught me valuable lessons about time management, problem-solving, and the importance of perseverance. I am proud of the effort I put into finishing the garments and grateful for the support from Geraldine and Ms. Melina. This intense period has not only enhanced my skills but also deepened my appreciation for the dedication required in fashion design.

Week 14

 (Look 1 overall)

 (Look 1 details)

 (Look 2 overall)

 (Look 2 details)

 (Model presenting my 2 looks)

Finally, it was presentation day, marking the last week of our semester. I owe a huge thanks to my friend Amanda and my classmate Ailing for modeling my designs.

My presentation slot was on Monday morning at 11 a.m. I managed to complete my models' makeup and hairstyling just in time. As I waited for my turn, I felt extremely nervous, worried that I might not perform well or that my presentation might not meet expectations. Thankfully, the presentation went smoothly, and I was relieved to see it come together successfully.

Although Ms. Melina and Mr. Jr provided some constructive criticism, they were also encouraging and offered praise for my efforts. Their feedback was valuable in highlighting areas for improvement while also acknowledging the hard work I put into the project. Overall, the experience was a fitting end to a challenging and rewarding semester.

Reflecting on the entire semester, I am proud of how much I’ve learned and grown as a fashion design student. The journey from pattern drafting to the final presentation was filled with challenges, but each obstacle taught me something new and helped me develop resilience and problem-solving skills. The support from my peers and instructors was crucial, and their encouragement motivated me to push through difficult moments. As I look back on the semester, I feel a deep sense of accomplishment and am excited to apply the knowledge and skills I’ve gained to future projects. This experience has not only strengthened my technical abilities but also affirmed my passion for fashion design.
