Project 1 - Proposal

Our group had gathered to decide on our Top 3 choices for this project to make or final selection easier. Our Top 3 Choices consisted on the Chrysanthemum flower, Black Cats and the Peacock. 

We had all agreed that the Black Cat was an interesting concept to base our assignment on and chose that as our final choice. 

Task Division

From there we had divided our task for each group member for our assignment. Each group member's task is as follows:

As part of my task for this assignment, I had gave the idea and a description about the content of the slides, arranging them into a summary description and passed it to Johanna for more detail content writing. With the help of my group members, we manage to collect all the necessary content for our presentation before passing it on to Bei Ni to prepare our slides. 

When all is done, me and Johanna has started to record the presentation video for our slides.

Project 2 - Field Study

Data Collection Methods

Google questionnaire survey (Observation study)
Through the questionnaire survey, we can understand the views of different people on black cats better The questions are as follows:


Video interview (Interview of relevant stakeholders)
Our group interviewed international students and teachers from countries such as United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, China, Italy, South Korea, Canada, United States and Singapore to answer a few questions about the symbolic significance of black cats in their respective cultures.

Material collection (Online and/or actual physical material. Visual research of the selected culture)
Our group’s material collection consists of The Furry Things Series, Bronze statue of the goddess Bastet, Vanessa Stockard, Black Cat Piggy Bank, Black Cat Shirt.

Final Project 

Final Design Output

We conducted a Google Forms to determine which Preliminary Idea would be most preferred by the majority. The results revealed that our Preliminary Idea #1 which is a bag product inspired by a black cat design garnered the highest number of votes, indicating its popularity among the public.

Based on our results, we decided to go with our Preliminary Idea #1 which is a bag inspired by a black cat design. From this, we decided to explore different styles of bags and expand our ideas for our black cat bag concept from there.

Bag Type Choices

Bag Type #1 - Tote bag Design





The designs above are from the initial sketches of our black cat bag concept

We expanded more designs with the bag type of the initial sketches we first had for our bag concept at the start of this project.

Bag Type #2 - Handbag Design


This bag type of design is expended from our concept and design of black cats and change it into more stereoscopic and interesting looking.

Bag Type #3 - Travel Bag Design




We decided to explored a bag design that could be more different and be able to hold more load compare to the first and second design, so we have reference the travel bag design and make a little bit of change on the shape and design.

Bag Type #4 - Backpack Design


After we had decided to produce a backpack concept of design, we had been thinking hard on how to make it more fashionable and interesting. And so we have expended from our second handbag design which is made the backpack as a black cat looking too.

Product Output Process

Step 1 - We made a conclusion to go with Bag Type #1 which is a tote bag type since it was a bag that was generally offered from printing services. We then finalized our choice of the artwork for our final design product with the opinion of our lecturer.
Step 2 - We contacted with Printlab Marketing Sdn Bhd and successfully placed our order.
Step 3 - In about 4 days, our product has arrived early for our physical submission date.

Final Reflection
Trough out the learning journey in this Intercultural Design (GCD61304), I have gain a very unforgettable and precious memory. As this is the first semester for my degree programme, I have no friends and someone familiar in my degree programme, but because of this Intercultural Design module have to be done in group from the first assignment to the final assignment, so I have meet new friends that are kind and nice. With the hard work and cooperate with my group mates, I have done all of my assignment wonderfully no matter the content of the assignment or the experience of the journey in this module.

Moreover, trough this module, I have learnt about the diversity of different culture, as the topic that we have choose is the black cat, so we had to study a lot and made research about black cat is what kind of existent in every cultures. It is fun to know a thing that had different meaning in every cultures. With the knowledge of black cats, we can now design a thing that is based on the black cats but not violate any cultural taboo. We designed the black cats image into a cut and fluffy thing and adding the various cute actions of the cats into it, so that it would not look so serious. 

On the other hand, all of our group members did well in their own parts. For those who are good in arts and drawing, had been giving task to draw out the sketches of the black cats and designs. Well for the others are taking parts in content writing, slides design and presentation. Only we could done our assignment on time when everyone had made a great teamwork and done the work with full of patience and enthusiasm. I was really appreciated to have them as my group members in this module.

I have gain a lot of TGC trough the assignment in this module, which include the digital literacy, I have to use the digital method to done my presentation slides and data collection, these techniques are not only will be used in this module but will also help me in my future learning and more. Next, I have gain the interpersonal skills, as I am the leader of my team I have to assign work and monitor progress, it is hard for me to be a leader as I am not and extrovert or a people with strong leadership skills, but hopefully I have done my parts all in order and indispensable is the cooperation and trustful of my group members. Last but not least, my communication skills had been improved since I have to communicate with my group members and the lecturers and this had helped me to improved my communication skills, communicating with the printing house also been a challenge for me but hopefully I have did it well and the finished product are satisfy by everyone. 

In conclusion, I like my group members so do I like the works that we had done together in the end. I hope that my group members will get better and better in the days to come and wish that our friendship will be long lasting. Black cats topic that we have choose for this assignment also has been an amazing memory for us as this kind of deeper intercultural relation between one thing will not be study in any of our module and we will also lack of attention to this kind of problem in our daily life. I really appreciate to what has I met during this module.
